TROJANS RUN PAST PANTHERS
ith Dezmon Jackson commanding so much attention from opposing defenses, it was critical for Parkers Chapel to find other weapons to relieve some of the pressure on the senior standout.
If their season opener on Friday night is any indication, the Trojans have those weapons in place.
Lane Harbour went 5-of-7 passing for 182 yards and a pair of scores, while Amonta Harris ran for two scores to lift the Trojans to a 39-18 victory over Magnet Cove at Victor Nipper Stadium.
The win gives the Trojans a 4-3 edge in one of the more unheralded non-conference series in the state.
More importantly, it snaps an eight-game home losing streak that dates back to the Trojans’ win over Midland JV that ended the 2013 regular season.
“It was important that we started off at home 1-0,” said Parkers Chapel coach James Housdan. “It’s been awhile since we’ve won here. We preach that we want to be road warriors, but we want to be home protectors as well. This was a great start.”
Parkers Chapel’s defense also had a terrific game, holding the Panthers to just 210 yards of total offense while intercepting quarterback Gavin Porter three times.
One of those interceptions was returned 90 yards for a touchdown by Canon Morgan, who sealed the Trojans’ win at Magnet Cove last year with a 95-yard interception return for a score.
“Again, the guys just stepped up and made plays,” Housdan said. “We expected that out of Canon. In his first five games (last year), he had five picks. He started right back where he was last year.”
An interception by Grayson Hurst in the second period led to Jackson’s 21-yard run that broke a 6-all tie.
But with much of Magnet Cove’s attention on Jackson, Harris and Harbour delivered solid performances.
Harbour made his presence felt by rolling out to his right and finding Jackson alone in the flat that turned into a 61-yard touchdown that opened the scoring.
Porter, who was 11-of-25 passing for 136 yards, threw the first of his two touchdown passes to tie the game by firing a 14-yard strike to Zach Dunlap that came after the Trojans muffed a punt.
The Trojans (1-0) then took advantage of a turnover with Hurst returning an interception 49 yards that led to Jackson’s aforementioned 21-yard jaunt that gave the Trojans the lead back.
Magnet Cove (0-1) pulled to within a point just 64 seconds later after Jamil Tyner hauled in a long pass down the left sideline from Porter for a 65-yard touchdown that made it 13-12.
On the ensuing possession, the Trojans nearly shot themselves in the foot due to a plethora of penalties.
Jackson, who had 77 yards on 16 carries, had a 33-yard touchdown run called back due to a penalty, and the Trojans were facing a second-and-20 from Magnet Cove’s 30 after another penalty.
Again, the Trojans’ passing attack delivered a big play, as Morgan made a superb diving catch to grab Harbour’s pass just in front of the goal line.
Despite another penalty later in the drive, Harris was finally able to extend the Trojans’ lead by easily beating the defense to the left pylon on a 6-yard run that made it 20-12.
Harris finished with 72 yards on 20 carries for the Trojans.
The Trojans led by the same score at intermission, and they wasted no time in padding their lead by scoring on their first possession of the second half.
Hurst made a great leaping catch for a 28-yard gain on a pass down the right sideline to put the Trojans in business with a first down at Magnet Cove’s 34.
A 14-yard run by Brendan Winchester gave the Trojans a first down at the 20.
However, two penalties and a 1-yard loss on a carry by Jackson pushed the Trojans back to the 31.
But the combination of Harbour and Morgan came through again, as Morgan made a great play to come back to the ball to grab Harbour’s pass down the left sideline for a 31-yard touchdown.
Overall, Morgan caught four passes for 83 yards.
Leading 26-12, the Trojans seemed to be in good shape, but the Panthers quickly marched to Parkers Chapel’s 23.
Porter then tried to thread a pass through the middle of the field, but it was deflected, and Morgan picked off the pass and raced 90 yards down the left sideline to give the Trojans a 32-12 lead.
Porter scored on a 4-yard run with 5:07 to play in the third period to make it 32-18, but the Panthers punted and turned the ball over on downs twice before Winchester picked off a pass late in the fourth period to seal the victory.
The Trojans’ running game also picked up plenty of tough yards in the final stanza, marching 55 yards on nine straight plays with Harris scoring on a 4-yard run to cap the scoring in the contest.
“We had to find a way to take the pressure off of Dez,” Housdan said. “We felt like we had some guys that could step up and do that, and we did. Grayson Hurst going up and making a big catch to get a crucial first down. Lane Harbour stepping up as a sophomore.
